Factors to Consider When Relocating with a Pet
Whether moving domestically or internationally, relocating with a pet involves unique challenges. We believe everyone deserves a safe, comfortable, purr-fect journey, and that includes your furry friends, too! Here, we review a few factors to consider, shared alongside photos of our team members’ own pets on the move.
Your Pet’s Physical Health
It is normal for people to feel tired or overwhelmed by relocating, and pets are no different. They don’t necessarily understand what’s going on around them, so it is important to try and keep them calm throughout a move. Consult a veterinarian to see if your pet is healthy enough to make the move and get advice on different ways to keep them comfortable. The vet can provide you with a better understanding of safely traveling with your pet and even how to get them adjusted to a new location.
Research Required Documents
Your relocating employee may need to present health documents to move with their pets, especially if it is an international move. It’s important to note the different documents necessary for relocating pets, such as vaccination records, health certificates, and more (some even include microchip information). Keep these documents in a safe, accessible container with you, rather than packed away, to use when necessary.
Research Transport Options
There is a plethora of transport options available for pets, including by ground and air, and even services that specialize in transporting pets. Ground transportation is ideal for shorter distances, or pets that are unable to easily travel on a plane. On the other hand, air travel is the most viable option for long-distance moves. It is important to check with the specific airline to see if they would be housed with the cargo hold, or in the cabin with the passenger. Also, check on any specific requirements the airline has for crate size, health documents, etc. For some pets, air travel can be a stressful experience but consulting with the veterinarian on sedation methods can allow for a more comfortable journey. Depending on how far your employee’s new destination is, they will need to consider the best option for their pet.
Research Local Import Laws
Different countries—and even states within the U.S.—have their own unique import laws for pets. They vary widely by country and include requirements with documentation, microchips, and sometimes even quarantine periods. To find out what is expected in your destination, contact government agencies in advance since some places have breed restrictions or require additional permits for certain animals. It is important to be informed of local laws.
Discuss any concerns for your pets with your Consultant. At Altair Global, our pet services partner can help with understanding what vaccinations, health requirements, and international rules and requirements are in place for traveling with cats or dogs for each step of the journey whether pre-move (vet consults, travel arrangements, acquiring documents, and a 24/7 customer service line), flights (customized flight schedules, tracking, climate-controlled flights, pet friendly vehicles, and pet hotels), or post move (grooming and boarding services).
From our pets to yours, we wish you and your furry loved ones a smooth move to your next destination!
